He retired from River Cement in 1995. Ernie was a member of American Legion Post #253 and VFW Post #3777.  He loved his family.  He had a passion for gardening; he loved working in his yard and planting flowers.  He was very handy with his hands.  Another one of his great skills was in the kitchen and on the grill.  His great cooking skills and hospitality will be sorely missed by many.  He loved to see anyone stopping by his home, to get enough to eat and drink.  He could make a mean barbeque sauce, many of his family have tried to imitate it, but it is yet to be duplicated.  He was an avid sports fan. A Chariot of Angels came down on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 8:10 p.m. and carried Ernie to Glory.  He was our ROCK…Ernie will be sorely missed by his wife of fifty-four years, Evelyn who was at his side, along with his four surviving children, Glenda (Tony) Ellis of Columbia, Missouri, Rochelle (Sid) Mayes, Monica Parks, and Reginald Cook all of Festus, Missouri, eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two son-in-laws, three sister-in-laws, Priscilla (nee Gray) Cook, Darlene (Kenneth) Dowe, Peggy (the late Donald) Bingham, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, twelve siblings, Clifton, William, Harold, Cecil, Wilma (Wingo), Carl, Lloyd, Margaret (Gill) Erma (Kinder), Kermit, Barbara Jane Cook and Doris Bland.  Two sons, Ernest V. Cook, Jr. and Ernest Tyrone Cook.  One grandson, Corey Parks, one great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Mayes, godson Sterling Underwood and in-laws Ward and Deloris (nee Hester) Blanks.
